Workshops are geared toward adults. Ages 13 and up, unless noted.

SWEETGRASS BASKET WORKSHOPS
Learn about the art of sewing sweetgrass baskets from renowned Gullah artist in this hands-on workshop. Sweetgrass baskets are world-famous cultural icons that have served as both an important economic resource and artistic tradition throughout Gullah history. Discover the techniques and stories behind this cherished art form, then learn how to craft your own basket using locally sourced natural materials.
A minimum number of participants is required for each workshop, so tell your friends!
DISCOVERY NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM
Spend Thursday evenings after hours at the Coastal Discovery Museum. Each Discovery Night offers something different—hands-on art, natural history programs, live demonstrations, and talks with museum staff and special guests. Bring a friend, pack some refreshments, and enjoy a relaxed evening of learning and conversation.

LANTERN MAKING WORKSHOPS
Create your own lantern and join us for Hilton Head Island’s beloved Lantern Parade on November 14.
Butterflies & More

- November 9 / 10 am to 12 pm
Design and decorate a 16-inch round paper lantern with guidance from our museum staff. Create a butterfly-inspired lantern or design something uniquely your own. We'll provide the lantern, lights and all crafting supplies.
Space is limited, and only registered participants will be admitted into the program area.
$40 – One (1) lantern kit and one (1) adult.
Ages 13 and older, please.

We’ll provide everything you need to create a butterfly-inspired 12-inch round lantern or one that’s uniquely your own. Geared towards elementary-aged children and older. A registered adult must accompany all children.
We recommend no more than two people per lantern, but larger groups are welcome to work together. Only registered participants will be admitted into the workshop area.
$20 per lantern $5 per adult (ages 13+) $5 per child (ages 4–12)
CANCELLATION POLICY
Need to cancel? No problem—just let us know at least 75 hours in advance, and we’ll refund your payment (minus a $5 per person admin fee).
We’re not able to offer refunds for cancellations made within 75 hours of the event.
