Whether leisurely exploring the extraordinary Honey Horn campus, attending talks, events, and festivals, signing up for educational programs and guided tours, or booking a personal event at a memorable, historic location, Coastal Discovery Museum has been Hilton Head Island’s center of preservation, education, and celebration for the past thirty five years. One visit will put you personally in touch with the past three centuries, and renew your appreciation for all that our area is and has to offer.

In addition to programs, tours, and experiences on the Honey Horn site, be sure to check all the off-site activities that will introduce you to different ecosystems, histories, and cultural experiences. There is no admission charge, but voluntary donations are accepted to help keep these resources available to everyone.

Our trail system begins behind the museum, and guides you along a path through distinctive environments and many historic structures. As you walk across an historic landscape, enjoy the magnificent live oaks and ancient cedars, take in the view from the boardwalk, see the Marsh Tacky horses grazing in the wide-open fields, and envision what the island was like before it was developed. You’re not on your own with printed resources in your pocket and educational panels throughout the property you’re always in “discovery.”

Above all the Museum is committed to its mission to Inspire People to Care for the Lowcountry, and creatively pursues this mission through a hands-on approach to getting visitors in touch with, and ultimately in love with, our region.

Since relocating, the Museum has expanded its offerings, doubled the number of students in education programs, and hosted dozens of special events and festivals annually.

In 2015 the Coastal Discovery Museum was officially recognized as a Smithsonian Affiliate joining 200 institutions around the country. Building on this recognition, Museum staff and board members have conducted strategic planning operations in recent years to establish and direct what will be the Coastal Discovery Museum’s impact, activities, and goals for the projected future, and measures to assure its ongoing presence in the Hilton Head community.
