In this hands-on workshop, you'll design and decorate a unique 16-inch round paper lantern with guidance from our museum staff. We'll provide everything you need—including the lantern, lights, and all crafting supplies—as well as plenty of materials to create a beautiful butterfly-inspired lantern. If you'd rather make something different, you're welcome to let your imagination soar and design a lantern that's uniquely yours. Topics include Native American life, the Spanish settlement of Santa Elena, Lowcountry folklore, the history of Honey Horn, the Civil War, forgotten communities, notorious murders and tragedies, and the evolution of Hilton Head through time. Through a first-person portrayal, Captain Jack will share stories of life on Hilton Head Island, his family's legacy, and the remarkable history of this treasured property. As you stroll the grounds with Captain Jack as your guide, you'll discover how the property has evolved over the past two centuries while learning about the people and events that shaped this remarkable place. Blending captivating storytelling with local history, this immersive program offers a unique opportunity to experience Honey Horn through the eyes of one of its earliest owners and gain a deeper appreciation for one of Hilton Head Island's most treasured historic sites.

Family Friendly. Geared towards elementary aged children and older. We recommend no more than two people per lantern, but larger groups are welcome to work together.
