Butterfly Discovery

Learn about butterflies through an interactive presentation and guided tour of the Karen Wertheimer Butterfly Habitat. Explore all four stages of the butterfly life cycle—egg, larva, chrysalis, and adult—and learn about local species, their role as pollinators, and simple ways to attract butterflies to your yard.

The Salt Marsh

Explore the salt marsh and learn why this coastal ecosystem is essential to healthy shorelines and waters. Examine the marsh as a nursery, refuge, and feeding ground for coastal wildlife, and learn how it filters water and helps protect the shoreline. Meet some of the animals that depend on this habitat, from wading birds and fiddler crabs to fish, snails, and other coastal wildlife.

Examine the hidden world of plankton and learn why these tiny organisms are essential to the health of marine ecosystems and the balance of our oceans. Take a short walk to the marsh creek to collect plankton samples and then get a closer look under a microscope.

Horseshoe Crabs: Living Fossils

Learn about the American horseshoe crab, Limulus polyphemus, and its long history on Earth. Explore its biology, adaptations, and role in coastal ecosystems, as well as its importance to modern medicine. Prickly Pears and the Cactus Moth:
A Conservation Story

South Carolina is home to several species of native prickly pears that grow on dunes, barrier islands, and sandhills. Learn how these plants support wildlife and contribute to coastal ecosystems—and how they are threatened by the invasive cactus moth, habitat loss, erosion, and beach renourishment. Learn more about conservation efforts to protect native prickly pears and the habitats they support.

Learn how to inoculate logs with mushroom spawn to grow your own delicious oyster and shiitake mushrooms. Get into the holiday spirit with a hands-on indigo tie-dye workshop! Celebrate the season by creating your own festive designs using natural indigo dye, derived from the indigo plant. Once a valuable cash crop in the Lowcountry, indigo is now a favorite among artists for its rich, vibrant hue.

Eliza Lucas Pinckney makes a return appearance! Step back into colonial South Carolina and “meet” the remarkable Eliza Lucas Pinckney, portrayed by author, historian and re-enactor Peggy Pickett. At just 17 in 1739, Eliza’s innovative work with indigo helped establish a booming industry in the Lowcountry. Immerse yourself in her captivating story, discover the art of indigo dyeing, and create your own indigo tie-dye t-shirt as a keepsake. The museum will provide one T-shirt (available sizes range from child medium to adult XL). You’re also welcome to bring one additional small cotton item to dye, such as a tea towel, scarf, or apron.
