LEARNING THROUGH EXPERIENCE
The Coastal Discovery Museum has offered educational and interactive programs to regional schools and youth-related organizations for 35 years and counting – reaching, teaching, and inspiring students to care for the Lowcountry.

These programs engage students in hands-on, experiential learning through programs aligned to many of South Carolina’s Curriculum Standards. Educational experiences are offered at our Honey Horn campus, several off-site locations, in your schools and classrooms, and online including new video learning programs expanded during 2020. Children participating in Coastal Discovery Museum programs have the opportunity to make meaningful connections between the natural history and cultural heritage of the Lowcountry, and some establish a lifetime interest that position them for promising preservation of our area for generations to come.

CONSERVATION
IN THE CLASSROOM

Inspiring “Tomorrow” to Care for the Lowcountry: This environmental education experience inspires and challenges students to take action and spread the word. Teachers pick the program that best suits their students, from subjects affiliated to regional environment – shorebirds, sea turtles, dolphins, or horseshoe crabs. Each theme includes an introduction activity to be led by the teacher in the classroom, followed by an education program presented by the Coastal Discovery Museum, and a hands-on classroom project for students. Projects are used throughout the community to promote environmental awareness and passion for our natural resources, and some students’ projects will be displayed in our annual exhibition (July/August 2021).

Conservation in the Classroom for the 2020-2021 school year is designed to be done with students in the classroom and/or virtually with students at home.
