Waddell Mariculture Center Tours

The Waddell Mariculture Center (WMC) in Bluffton, SC, is a field experiment station of the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR), and one of the largest and most sophisticated facilities for mariculture research in the country.
During this guided tour of the grounds, laboratory, hatchery, and ponds, you'll get an inside look at how the center raises estuarine and saltwater fish for research and release along South Carolina's coast, and mariculture’s role in supporting healthy fisheries, protecting coastal ecosystems, and preserving our shorelines for future generations.
Please note:
· Closed-toed shoes are required. No admittance to the hatchery with open-toed shoes.
· Since half of the tour is outside, bug spray, sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, and comfortable shoes are recommended.

Dolphin Cruise with University of South Carolina Beaufort Researchers

Step aboard a dolphin cruise along the scenic waters of Hilton Head Island, guided by researchers from the University of South Carolina Beaufort (USCB). This intimate experience offers a behind-the-scenes look at the region’s Atlantic bottlenose dolphins. As you glide through waterways alongside the salt marsh, you’ll gain insight into dolphin behavior, conservation efforts, and ongoing research from the scientists studying them.

Altamaha Town Heritage Preserve Trail Talk
October 7, 2026 10 am – 12 pm
Explore the natural and cultural history of Beaufort County's public lands on this guided 1.5-mile walking tour led by a local naturalist. Along the trail, you'll discover native plant species, observe local wildlife, learn about the history of Altamaha and the Yemassee people, and hear about the archaeological surveys that have uncovered clues to the area's past. Every walk offers opportunities to experience seasonal changes and scenic landscapes.

Low Tide Exploring
October 26, 2026 2 – 3 pm
Explore Hilton Head Island’s shoreline at low tide on a guided beach walk at Fish Haul Beach Park. We’ll begin with a brief orientation at the picnic tables near the beach path before heading out to explore the ever-changing shoreline of Hilton Head Island. Discover the hidden life along the beach, and the creatures that make their homes in the sand and mudflats. Learn how tides shape this dynamic coastal environment and the life cycles of the animals that depend on it.

Pinckney Island in the Fall

Experience the beauty and history of Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge on a guided tour through some of the Lowcountry’s most distinctive habitats. Explore salt marshes, maritime forests, and freshwater lagoons as you spot seasonal wildlife and migrating birds. As the landscape takes on the character of autumn, learn how these diverse ecosystems support an abundance of plant and animal life. Along the journey, learn about the island’s cultural history, including its connection to General Charles Cotesworth Pinckney, a signer of the United States Constitution, and enjoy the peaceful natural beauty of this special corner of Hilton Head Island. Approximately 1.5 miles roundtrip walking tour on uneven terrain.
