Turtles, alligators, and even snakes, are local celebs in our area and it pays to know them. Learn about the habits, characteristics, contribution, and reputation of regional reptiles as well as how to protect these amazing creatures and safely enjoy sharing the lowcountry with them. Yes! You will see (and maybe even get to touch) live reptiles during this experience!

From the earliest Native Americans inhabitants who harvested oysters and hunted Black Bear to the modern day residents and visitors who flock here for recreation and relaxation, the island has gone through centuries of evolutionary changes and uses by diverse groups of people. Logging, farming, hunting, and fishing are as much of the area’s identity as it is a resort home to over 35,000 full time residents and a tourist retreat to tens of thousands more. Learn from a museum docent about all the different pages that have turned, and are turning still, in the tale of permanent or passing islanders from Native Americans, to Gullah, to you.
