Discovery Lecture Series and Discovery Nights Resume at Coastal Discovery Museum

OCTOBER 1, 2023

Hilton Head Island, SC – Coastal Discovery Museum is thrilled to announce the return of its highly anticipated Discovery Lecture Series and Discovery Nights at the Museum for the fall and spring quarters. These engaging and informative events offer attendees the opportunity to delve into the rich natural and historical heritage of the South Carolina Lowcountry.

Discovery Lecture Series:
The Discovery Lecture Series will be held every Wednesday at the Coastal Discovery Museum from 2:30 pm to 3:30 pm. For a nominal fee of $7 per person, participants can gain access to the latest educational insights concerning the nature, preservation, and history of the Lowcountry. Our Director of Education, Dawn Brut, and Diverse Narratives Educator & Archaeologist, Katherine Seeber, have worked tirelessly to bring back beloved lecturers while introducing new topics based on the latest research.

Katherine Seeber will kickstart the Lecture Series on October 4th with her new course, "Native Americans in the Lowcountry." This lecture will provide a deep dive into the lives of the inhabitants of Hilton Head Island before the arrival of colonial settlers. Following this, on October 11th, Margaret Pickett will captivate audiences with "The Intriguing Truth About Medicine in Colonial Times," delving into the medical practices of the colonial era, including an analysis of the treatment given to George Washington during his final illness.

Discovery Nights at the Museum offer a blend of entertainment and hands-on experiences every Thursday evening at varying times, approximately from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. These events have already proven to be popular amongst locals, with the first Discovery Night: Wildlife Photography Class, led by a professional wildlife photographer, selling out weeks in advance.

The upcoming Discovery Nights are a must-attend for gardening enthusiasts and plant lovers. On October 5th, join us for "Backyard Botanical Arrangement," where you will learn how to create beautiful arrangements using plants from your own backyard. Then, on October 12th, Master Gardener Marcia Lentz will guide participants through the creation and care of glass terrariums, making it an evening of both creativity and horticultural insight.
