Coastal Discovery Museum’s Fall Lineup: Walks, Talks, Tours & Exhibits Highlighting the Lowcountry

This fall, Coastal Discovery Museum, a Smithsonian Affiliate, invites you to experience the Lowcountry’s rich natural beauty, history, culture and art through a wide array of programs. From hands-on workshops, expert-led tours and talks to a major art retrospective, the museum offers something for everyone.

“Fall is one of the best times to visit the museum, whether you’re a longtime resident, newcomer, or visitor,” said Museum Director Rex Garniewicz. “Our fall lineup brings fresh opportunities to connect with the Lowcountry and share memories with friends and family.”

Program Highlights:

Major Art Retrospective

"This is Not: Aldwyth in Retrospect" – A comprehensive exhibition spanning the remarkable 70-year career of acclaimed South Carolina artist Aldwyth. Opens October 16, with a reception on October 17, from 5-7 pm. Free and open to the public.

Nature & Wellness

  • Yoga on the Marsh – Back by popular demand! This 9-week series returns to Honey Horn on Fridays, starting Oct. 4. Enjoy guided yoga sessions on the boardwalk overlooking the Jarvis Creek salt marsh. 11 am/$20 per session.
  • Exclusive Waddell Mariculture Center Tours – Get an insider’s view of the country’s leading saltwater fish research facility in Bluffton, managed by the SC Department of Natural Resources. Oct. 8 & Nov. 5, 10:30 am/$25 per person.

Local Heritage & Craft

  • 3-Day Sweetgrass Basket Workshop – Learn about the history, art and techniques of sweetgrass basket weaving from 7th-generation Gullah artist Michael Smalls and his partner Dino Badger. Create a piece of Lowcountry heritage to take home. Nov. 13-15, 9:30 am/$425 per person.
  • Indigo Exploration with Eliza Lucas Pinckney– Historian Peggy Pickett brings to life the story of Eliza Lucas Pinckney, the colonial woman who revolutionized SC’s indigo industry. Participants create their own indigo tie-dye keepsake. Nov. 7, 5 pm/$20 per person.

Local Insights & Community

  • Gregg Russell: Hilton Head Treasure – Join Hilton Head musical icon Gregg Russell as he shares stories from his early days on the island and his career as the pied piper of Harbour Town. Oct. 23, 2:30 pm/$7 per person
  • Don’t Let Your Recycling Go to Waste – Mike Bennett, owner of i2recycle, will explain Beaufort County’s new recycling guidelines and offer tips and recycling dos and don’ts. Nov. 6, 2:30 pm/$7 per person.

Schools & Homeschool Programs

  • The Museum also offers a range of engaging programs for schools and homeschool groups, from field trips to teacher workshops, aligned with South Carolina’s curriculum standards. Contact Dawn Brut, Director of Education, [email protected].

The museum is open Monday-Saturday from 9 am to 4:30 pm, and Sunday from 11 am-4:30 pm. Admission is free, and donations are appreciated.
