POETRY WORKSHOP
AN AFTERNOON IN THE CAMELLIA GARDEN
January 27, 2026/2 – 4 pm

Discover the power of poetry to deepen your connection with the natural world. In this immersive workshop, local poet, writer, and translator Miho Kinnas guides participants in crafting haiku—short, evocative poems of just 17 syllables—sparked by the serene beauty of the Museum’s Manske Camellia Garden.

Begin by exploring the diversity of the camellia garden, home to more than 135 varieties. Learn about their forms, colors, and subtle characteristics that make each variety unique. Photograph the blossoms that draw your eye, then slow down to observe their details.

With Miho’s gentle guidance, you’ll reflect on your experience and translate your observations into three distilled lines of poetry. Along the way, you’ll learn practical techniques for shaping imagery and embracing the simplicity and depth of haiku. Everyone’s welcome—connect with nature, spark your creativity, and craft your own garden-inspired haiku.

Miho Kinnas is the author of three poetry collections, including Waiting for Sunset to Bury Red Camellias (Free Verse Press). Her work has been featured in Best American Poetry and nominated for the Pushcart Prize.
