Teacher Workshops

The Coastal Discovery Museum offers a variety of unique experiences for teachers that give them the opportunity to expand their understanding of Lowcountry history and natural history through experiential learning and provides the tools to take those experience back to their classrooms.

GULLAH
HERITAGE

Gullah is a unique culture rooted in West African based traditions, customs, beliefs, art forms, and family life. It endured centuries of enslavement and more than a century and a half of freedom. Sponsored by The Bargain Box, teachers will be introduced to the Gullah culture and history, travel through native island neighborhoods on the Gullah Heritage Trail Tour, and learn how to sew a sweetgrass basket.

Horseshoe Crabs are fascinating creatures that play an important ecological role and might have even saved your life. Sponsored by The Bargain Box, this program educates local teachers about Horseshoe Crabs at a FREE professional development workshop. Teachers who complete the training are supplied with the materials necessary to raise their own horseshoe crabs in their classrooms for one year.

FROM SEEDS
TO SHORELINE

The SC Sea Grant Consortium, in partnership with the SC Department of Natural Resources, and Clemson Extension, host FREE teacher professional development workshops designed to educate about the salt marsh ecosystem and how they can incorporate the From Seeds to Shoreline project into their classrooms. The Coastal Discovery Museum is proud to be a supporting hub for the From Seeds to Shoreline participants. LIVE VIRTUAL EXPERIENCES

Field trips are a great outing, especially on Honey Horn, , but on Students and teachers can participate in live virtual experiences with a Coastal Discovery Museum naturalist or historian. This is a great opportunity for kids to get connected to and take a closer look at the unique environment and history of the Lowcountry.

TRAVELING TRUNK

The Stoney/Baynard Traveling Trunk is available for teachers to sign out and use in their classroom. The trunk includes artifacts, books, and a flash drive with lesson plans, letters & transcripts, and newspaper articles. The trunk is designed for 3rd graders and the Artifact, Civil War, Gullah Culture, and Plantation Life lessons cover a variety of state standards.
