CAMELLIA -
"WINTER'S ROSE"
December 5th, January 9th, and February 6th - 1 - 2:30 PM
The Coastal Discovery Museum’s camellia garden has over 130 varieties that showcase all the different plant varieties and flower types found in camellias. The garden is part of the American Camellia Trail designated by the American Camellia Society. During this indoor presentation and walking tour, learn about the history, diversity, and significance of camellias, as well as how to grow and care for camellias in the Lowcountry.

Do you love the Lowcountry’s winter rose? Come and learn how to grow and care for camellias from Coastal Discovery Museum’s Manager of Horticulture, Wendy Dickes. Learn how to choose from the over 20,000 varieties of camellias, be provided with successful planting techniques and simple directions to keep them thriving. Become familiar with what diseases and pests to watch for and how to control any issues with them. The class will be followed by a walk through the Manske Camellia Garden to view and enjoy over 135 varieties.

Programs will include hands-on art activities and demonstrations, special natural history programs, and presentations by museum staff and special guests. Check the online calendar to see what is coming. These programs are for ages 7 and older.

Come and meet some of the coolest critters around…REPTILES! Meet and get to know some Lowcountry lizards, snakes, turtles, and alligators. Learn why these cold-blooded critters are important and examine the fun adaptions they have that help them survive in the wild.

Come and learn how indigo dye is made from a plant and use it to create a tie dye t-shirt to take home. The Museum will provide you with one t-shirt (size Child M – Adult XL) to tie dye with indigo dye. You are welcome to bring an additional cotton item to dye.

Learn about the history of the Sweetgrass Basket from a local 7th generation Gullah basket maker. During this special holiday class, you'll have a chance to make a decorative Sweetgrass wreath on your own using locally found natural materials. Class will last around 2 hours. Not recommended for children under 12. Reservations are required.
