Life and Times of Robert Smalls (Beaufort - 6 PM)

Robert-Smalls2-1Donald Sweeper portrays Robert Smalls in this stage reenactment as he discusses the commandeering of the Planter boat on the early morning of May 13, 1862. That morning, Robert Smalls piloted through the Charleston Harbor undetected by the Confederates and sailed past Fort Sumter on the way to the Union blockade forces situated out into the Atlantic. Smalls eventually became a member of the U.S. House of Representatives and the owner of the plantation on which he had been enslaved. Robert Smalls is brought to life by Donald Sweeper, a Beaufort native, educator, and storyteller. This program is offered in partnership with the Beaufort County Historical Society, Tabernacle Baptist Church, the Mitchelville Preservation Project, and the Coastal Discovery Museum.
