Remnants of Mitchelville film Coastal Discovery Museum, 100 William
Hilton Parkway
Remnants of Mitchelville, a film produced by
Jimmy Henderson of Columbia, South Carolina, focuses on the history and legacy
of Mitchelville. Henderson accidentally stumbled upon Mitchelville during a
trip to the Island, but after looking a little deeper, it turned into a film
project. Henderson says that, the story is told through a variety of
visual formats--film, video tape, newspapers, photographs, and even a steamer
ticket. He spent a great amount of time researching the history and
finding these resources. Eventually, he thought he had completed the project,
but, he says, The film still kept pulling me back. The story
needed some more detail. This is the third cut of the film.
In
2002, Henderson screened original version of the film as part of the Freedom
Day Celebration during the Native Islander Gullah Celebration. The Coastal
Discovery Museum is pleased to welcome Henderson and his film back to Hilton
Head Island.
