| MARSH TACKY HORSE RACE February 28, 2010 Event celebrates the history of the Marsh Tacky Horse
As part of the annual Hilton Head Gullah Celebration, the Coastal Discovery museum, the Carolina Marsh Tacky Association and the Native Islander Business and Affairs Association (NIBCAA) have partnered to produce the "2nd Annual Marsh Tacky Horse Race" at Coligny Beach on Sunday, February 28, 2010. The Marsh Tacky is a small, stocky horse that has been linked to Spanish horses brought to the region during the 16th Century. They are well suited to traverse the Lowcountry's marshes and swampy terrain. Berfore modern development, almost all island families would have had a Tacky - they were used for transoportation and labor. In years past, families would engage in Marsh Tacky races, often on Christmas Day - from house to house on island beaches. This year's event has been organized to honor that history and to share the stories that go along with the history of Marsh Tackies in the Lowcountry.
